Sofia Romero Alvarado

Sofia is 11 years old. She loves to listen to music, dance and play with cubes and stones. Her favorite food are chicken breasts and she enjoys going to the cinema and watching her father cook. Nadia Alvarado is her mother and her father is Jose Manuel Romero, she doesn't have any brothers nor sisters yet.

Sofia was a premature baby, being born at 8 months, she suffered a Fetal Distress. At an initial stage her parents were told that she suffered Hypoxia, however, months later a diagnosis of cerebral palsy was confirmed. From that moment on Sofia has gone through different types of therapy that have positively contributed towards her development

. During her first year she went through therapy at the children´s hospital, while experiencing dolphin therapy which helped her to begin to speak. In the same manner, she took on acupuncture sessions that helped her develop her spasticity; and she had homeopathy sessions were she also had electropunture therapy as well as music therapy which helped her loose her fear towards doctors.

After these experiences she entered CRIT, were she went on a daily basis, taking occupational and language therapy as well as hydrotherapy and neurotherapy. When Sofia turned five her family was advised enroll her into a school in order to develop her psycomotor development. She assisted a regular kinder garden. She continued her educational process in a Montessori primary system for some years.

Her advances were steady and significant until age six. She controlled her sphincters, was able to sit up by herself, and her parents were very satisfied with her achievements. However, there was a sudden act that was immensely detrimental to Sofia´s learning process. Her house was violently broken into and robbed, she witnessed everything. Regrettably, this negative experience generated a trauma that provoked and overall reversal of her accomplishments.

From then on Sofia has been recovering step by step. Nevertheless, she now is 11 years old, and her parents have manifested that they have faced great difficulties in gaining access to therapeutic services. Nadia has told us that the facilities are scarcer and the prices for therapy have risen. Now that Sofia has grown, getting around has become one more inconvenient that her family must face.
